Main Beach Backpackers (1800 150 233):
Corner of Lawson Street and Fletcher Street
Part of the Nomads group of hostels, and just two minutes walk from Main Beach, this is one of the quieter hostels in Byron. Lights and television are off at eleven o'clock so don't stay here if you want to party. If you want to take it easy and some peace and quiet, this is the place for you. Rooms are clean, if somewhat cramped. This is due to the in-room security lockers. It also has its own car-park, pool and a big clean kitchen. Dorm rooms cost $23 per night in a dorm of 6/8, and if you book 3 nights together $20 per night

The Arts Factory Lodge (02 6685 7709):
Skinners Shoot Road
Byron's alternative hostel is also home to "The Piggery", a vegetarian restaurant and cinema in one. This hostel offers a dorms, surfshacks, wagons, teepees and other types of accommodation, and some are girl only. It's main disadvantage is that it is a 10 minute walk from the main town. Various types of dorms sleeping 6, 10 or 12 people costing $24-$26 per night. Campsites are $13 per night

Aquarius Backpackers (1800 028 909):
161 Lawson Street
Aquarius has a solar heated swimming pool and is a popular backpackers in Byron. A cafe/bistro and a large kitchen is also on the premises. Rooms are en-suite with their own tv and fridge. They also offer free boogie boards. A bed in a dorm of 8 will set you back $28, $25 if you book 3 nights in advance

Backpackers Inn (02 6685 8231):
29 Shirley Street
This hostel is one of the newer hostels in Byron. It is very close to the beach, but not so close to the town! Boogie boards and mountain bikes are free for hire if you plan on cycling down to the beach and surfing the waves. 4/5 bed dorms cost $23 with VIP, $25 without
