Hostels:

Bohemia Resort (1800 155 353):
231 McLeods Street
Opened in August 2000, Bohemia is one of Cairns' newest hostels. This place is a real palace and gets extremely good feedback from backpackers. There is a big pool, a well-equipped kitchen, free pool and table tennis and a nice tv room if you want to chill out. Rooms are extremely well kept, have air conditioning and a fridge for your eats. Toilets are also really clean. And if the walk into the centre seems a bit much, a bus service to and from the hostel runs hourly. 3/4 bed dorms cost $18 per night with a free meal in The Woolshed

Caravellas 149 (07 4051 2431):
149 The Esplanade
149 is one of two Caravella hostels in Cairns. Both are located on the Esplanade. There is a lively atmosphere around this hostel with loads of travellers relaxing in the open yard all day. A decent sized pool, television and pool tables are also in this area making it a good place to meet people. Once the sun goes down there is always loads of people drinking here also. At the check-in desk there is internet access, and if you book your tours from here (Cape Trib, rafting etc.) you can get discounts. Accommodation is separated into blocks meaning one bathroom is shared between about 16 people. Beds in dorms of 4/6 cost $19 a night with a free meal in The Underdog

International Hostel (07 4031 1545):
67 The Esplanade
This is a fairly big and noisy place situated right in the middle of the Esplanade beside the Rattle 'n' Hum pub. Unlike Caravellas it hasn't large outdoor areas so you won't make too many new acquaintances here. A bed in a four bed dorm costs around $21 a night with a free meal in Rattle 'n' Hum bar next door

Captain Cook Backpackers Hostel (1800 243 512):
204 Sheridan Street
Despite being a little away from all the action, this is a popular hostel with backpackers. It is hard not to take notice of the building due to a huge statue of Captain Cook outside. There are loads of facilities in this huge hostel: two pools, two bars, a sand volleyball court and a fairly average kitchen. Breakfast is free and you get cheap evening meals if you buy a jug of beer or wine. The rooms are ensuite with air con. Dorms holding 6/9 cost $15 per night
