Hostels:

Melaleucas (1800 623 543):
50 Mitchell Street
This hostel on Mitchell St. (where most of Darwin's hostels are) is only 5 minutes walk from most shops and nightlife. Rooms are very clean and come with a sink, lockers and air-con. There is a nice swimming pool area, but if your room is situated beside it you could be up half the night. Be warned. A bed in a 4/8-bed dorm costs $20/$22 a night

Globetrotters Lodge (1800 800 798):
97 Mitchell Street
Situated futher down Mitchell St., Globetrotters claims to be the only hostel in Australia with a bar that sells it's own in-house beer. Rooms can tend to get very crowded as so much is squashed into a small room. Four sets of bunk beds, a small fridge and bathroom can cause things to get a tad cramped. A thriving nightlife in the bar down stairs can also roll over on to the surrounding balconies. Dorms with 8 beds cost $18.70 a night
