Things
to do:
Mataranka
Thermal Pools:
The first big attraction south of Katherine are natural swimming
pools which stay a pleasant 34C all year round. These pools are always
open and have no entrance fee. They are also surrounded by rainforest
which makes the swim even nicer.
Larrimah:
With a population of approximately 30 people, you wouldn't think
there is much to do here. You would be right because there isn't. There
is a hotel with a giant Pink Panther sitting in a seat outside and loads
of empty cans of beer stuck on the wall inside. and a museum acorss
the road with interesting facts about the town's history.
Daly
Waters:
The pub here is meant to be Australia's oldest. There's usually
lots of life here, even though it is in the middle of nowhere. All around
the walls are different bits and bobs collected over the years. Don't
be surprised if you happen to see your mate's USIT card stuck up on
the wall!
The
Devil's Marbles:
A strange, strange place but really fascinating and well worth the
visit. These are giant rounded boulders which, according to Aboriginal
beliefs, were scattered around by the Rainbow Serpent.
Wycliffe
Well:
The 'UFO Centre of Australia'. Many people claim to have seen mysterious
objects in the sky here, those not flown by humans. Loads of alien stuff
about the place to keep you occupied if you stop at the petrol station
there for a while.
The
Tropic of Capricorn:
By this stage you will have noticed the change in weather if you
are travelling south from Darwin. Nothing too major here, just a roadsign
and a plaque stating that you are crossing the tropic of Capricorn.
Tennant
Creek:
It's recognised as one of the major stops between Darwin and Alice,
but the only reason I can see to stop there is to put your head down
for the night after a lot of driving. This town is best known for gold
mining.
