Oztrek.com's Magnetic Island pages are where you can read reviews of hostels on Magnetic Island, check out what are the best things for backpackers to do there and find out what are Magnetic Island's best backpacker bars and clubs. Once you have read hostel reviews and picked the hostel you wish to stay in, this is where to come to find out what to do next!

Boasting an average of 320 days of sunshine a year, Magnetic Island got it's name from Captain Cook who thought his compass was inaccurate when passing by in 1770. Only the east coast of the island is accessible by any type of vehicle other than 4-wheel drive on this island just off the coast of Townsville. If you are content with just the east side of the island, the best mode of transport is a moke.

More than half the island is National Park and there are lots of fantastic walks to do on 25km of walking track. If you prefer to do your sightseeing under water, this isn't a problem as Magnetic Island (or Maggie Island as it is commonly known) is right in the middle of the Great Barrier Reef and is surrounded by wonderful snorkelling and dive sites.
