Things
to do:
Go to
an Aussie Rules game:
Australian Rules football is mostly at home in Melbourne, even
though it is a national sport. The city's most famous stadium is the
MCG, which was originally built for the Olympics in the
1950's. Another newer stadium is the Colonnial Stadium,
close to Spencer Street train station. There are plenty more scattered
around the city. Atmosphere at a 'footie' game is unique. Make sure
and catch a game.
Gamble:
Ok, so you might be saving all your money to do different activities
around Victoria, so gambling probably isn't number one on your priority
list of things to do, but you really should make a trip to the amazing
Crown Casino on Southbank. This is the biggest casino
in the Southern Hemisphere and is full of bright flashy lights and annoying
jingles from slot machines (or pokies as they are called in Australia).
There are some good bars and cafes on the complex too, such as a Planet
Hollywood.
Ski:
If you plan on living in Melbourne for a while, ski-ing is a good idea
as there are loads of ski resorts to choose from. One popular resort
in Victoria is Mount Houtham in the Alpine National Park.
This mountain is the states highest ski-ing area. It may be a good journey
from Melbourne city, but not many people think of ski-ing when thinking
of Australia. All information about the resort, and Victoria's other
ski resorts can be found by ringing the Alpine Resort Commission
(03 9895 6900).
People-watch
on Chapel Street:
This is Melbourne's chicest street and full of trendy bars and nightclubs.
Most of the city's best shops are here also. If you are in the city
on a day off and just want to chill, but want to get out at the same
time go have a coffe somewhere along Chapet Street.
