Most of the rooms in this family-run hostel surround a decent sized pool. There are also comfortable seats and tables outside the rooms which are nice for reading or just having a chat. Kitchen facilities are really open. In the same room is the tv so it is always pretty full. The biggest attraction here is that free cocktails are dished out (when you bring your cup to the bar) every night so you can tank up before getting that 4 litre cask of wine. Dorms of 4 with ensuite cost $16 per night

Mission Beach Backpackers Lodge (07 4068 8317):

This modern hostel with a nice pool and garden is let down with rooms which could be a bit cleaner. Also, if you're not the most trusting traveller this definitely isn't the place for you as no one in the room gets a key! 8-bed dorms cost $16 a night

Bingil Bay
A very quiet hostel and a small bit hippified. It is also a short journey out of the main town, as are most hostels in Mission Beach. And, like all the other hostels, they run an hourly service into the town. Beds start at $20 in rooms of six
