Home to Sydney, the Blue Moutains and Australia's most easterly point, this is where Captain Cook first landed when he got to Australia. With ski resorts in the Snowy Mountains, vineyards in the Hunter Valley and some of the country's most beautiful beaches you'll never get bored in New South Wales.

Accommodation:

You won't be long finding a hostel anywhere in New South Wales. If it's Sydney you're planning on staying in for a while, check the Sydney Morning Herald and the Daily Mail for accommodation listings. There are also real estate agents which may find you accommodation. Kings Cross in Sydney is the hostel centre

Places To Go:

Sydney:
Most of the stops on the east coast of Australia are in Queensland, but your starting or finishing point is sure to be Sydney. With one of the most beautiful harbours you are likely to see, you can't beat sitting down at Circular Quay and being able to gaze at the Opera House on one side and the Harbour Bridge on the other. Then you can get away from the city centre and visit wonderful beaches such as Bondi or Manly.

Byron Bay:
For many travellers Byron Bay is the first or last stop before/after Sydney. A popular destination with surfers, one of the finest walks in the country is there when you walk out to Australia's most easterly point at Cape Byron. The town has become very hippified over the years with half the population walking around in their bare feet.

Work:

Most travellers on a one year visit end up staying some amount of time in Sydney. Agencies are always helpful to backpackers if you want to do some temping. The city's numerous cafes, restaurants and bars will also employ backpackers in the hospitality trade.

In smaller destinations bars and hostels sometimes can offer work to travellers.

Going out:

It is hard to go to Sydney without partying all night, at least once. Whether it is in the city or one of the suburbs, it is a fantastic city for socialising. Other spots such as Byron have loads of bars to choose from as well.
