Much of South Ausrtralia is barren. Between Port Augusta and Alice Springs on the Stuart Highway is nothing but desert. But on the other hand, SA is still home to Adelaide - another of Australia's beautiful cities. Up until a few years ago the annual Australian Grand Prix was held there. And of course there is Coober Pedy, the place where they say everybody goes to to disappear. These attractions, along with the state's famous vineyards, make South Australia surprisingly popular over the last decade.

Accommodation:

Adelaide is full of hostels. Most are in one of two places - the city centre and Glenelg, which is down by the beach. Port Augusta and Coober Pedy also have some hostels to choose from.

If you're looking for long term accommodation Adelaide is your best bet.

Places To Go:

Adelaide:
After visiting Australia's other bigger cities, or by listening to those who have, you have a premonition of Adelaide being more like a big town. But Adelaide doesn't have this feeling with a wonderful skyline, and a population of over 1 million people.

Coober Pedy
Ever see 'Mad Max III - Beyond the Thunderdome'? Well this film was made there. A very strange place where most of the houses, and even a church, are underground.

Work:

Every now and then you hear of backpackers coming to Australia for the year and living in Adelaide. Although not many do it, there are still temporary jobs to be filled just like any of the other cities. Apart from Adelaide there aren't many other places where work is found.

Going Out:

Adelaide also has it's fair share of bars and clubs. Going out in Adelaide is very refreshing as you notice that you are socialising with Australians, and not just another bunch of backpackers. Coober Pedy, on the other hand, only has one or two bars and a hotel.
